Hooting and Hollering: A Queer Space Debrief

Updated: Dec 20, 2024

Edinburgh's queer scene has long been a vibrant and welcoming hub of creativity, inclusivity, and celebration, with the city offering a rich tapestry of spaces that cater to the LGBTQ+ community. Among the standout venues shaping this dynamic culture are CeCe Bloom's and Live at Hoots Bruntsfield, both beloved by locals and visitors alike. CeCe’s, a lively and stylish bar, offers a relaxed yet energetic environment where queer people and allies come together to dance, chat, and enjoy a drink in a fun, eclectic space.

On the other end of Princes Street, Hoot’s has earned a reputation for its eclectic live music scene, offering a stage for queer performers and creating an atmosphere that fosters connection and creativity. Together, these spots contribute to Edinburgh’s growing queer scene, making it a city where diversity, expression, and love can truly thrive.

Live at Hoots is a popular comedy and drag venue located on Home Street in Edinburgh, known for its lively and inclusive atmosphere. It's a space that blends the best of both comedy and drag entertainment, offering a unique and dynamic experience for locals and visitors alike. This venue has carved out a reputation for being a fun, relaxed spot to enjoy top-notch performances, with a focus on high-energy shows and a strong sense of community.Hoots is locally owned and operated, with a team that is deeply passionate about providing unique entertainment options to Edinburgh's diverse community. The team takes it in turns checking up on the place when no shows or gigs are frequenting the space, and I was lucky enough to speak with Rick, the main bar manager who could indulge me in all that Hoots is about.

Rick tells me about their rotation of entertainment and how Hoot’s brings comedy and drag to Bruntsfield. He laughs on the phone as he jokes about how the middle-aged mothers and their reactions when a host of kings and queens in drag come waltzing down the road. They have a roster of performers who take to the stage in all their fabulous glory, with their current comic runner being yet another Rick! Our Rick tells me that this imposter goes by the name Rick Molland, and that his comedy set is actually quite good (even if the namesake is stolen). Tickets for ‘’The Stand-Up Show’’ for Friday the 18th of December are now on sale from their website, and with well-priced booze comes well-priced tickets, at £4 each.

Cece’s Blooms, one of Edinburgh’s premier LGBTQ+ venues, is remembered fondly by Laura, who managed the bar until her departure in 2021. During her stint, the venue became a hub for the community, hosting everything from drag shows and karaoke to poetry nights and fundraisers. Laura recalls the electric atmosphere, particularly during events like the 2019 Pride afterparty, which featured a whole roster of high-end guests. Challenges were part of the journey too, including managing a safe and inclusive environment and navigating the pandemic’s impact. The bar adapted with virtual drag shows, takeaway cocktails, and community check-ins, ensuring patrons stayed connected even during lockdown

Reflecting on her time at Cece’s Laura emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the community, supporting local artists, and staying adaptable. She cherishes the memories of a buzzing venue filled with joy, laughter, and connection, proud to have been part of such a unique and welcoming space.

Edinburgh's queer scene is more than just a collection of venues; it’s a testament to the city’s commitment to creativity and community. From the energetic dance floors and eclectic ambiance of CeCe’s Blooms to the drama and laughter-filled stages of Live at Hoots, these spaces are essential threads in the vibrant tapestry of Edinburgh's LGBTQ+ culture. They provide not just entertainment but also a sense of belonging and connection for locals and visitors alike. With venues like these continuing to champion diversity and expression, Edinburgh stands as a shining example of how cities can embrace and celebrate their queer communities, ensuring the spirit of love and inclusion flourishes for generations to come.
