A Night in The Dog House: A Review

The Doghouse on Newington specialises in a visibly queer and proud aesthetic. Though some of their brand is explicit, specifically their bold drink names and menu, one thing they cannot be faulted for is how explicitly comfortable and welcoming they are.

Whereas I was not prepared upon visiting to ever utter anything nearly as perverse as the drink names to my sister. The visit had us in uproarious laughter as the night went on. Every corner of the place is stacked with conversation starter after conversation starter. From the graffitied mannequins to the teddy bears on the ceiling.

Hanging pride flags year-round and hosting drag shows, the queer community feel safe here. The flashy lights mixed with the alternative darker themes welcome everyone in the community, especially as their music and performances reflect this.

Unfortunately, our visit here did not seem fruitful in terms of performances, or live music. Instead, we were the audience to a massive variety of music and conversation amongst the friendly regulars. Which absolutely did not have a negative effect on our night.

In terms of food, they provided an odd way of ordering during our visit. With the attached food menu, all you had to do was shoot the cook a text on WhatsApp and they’d be at your table in no time. Seasoned chips with deep fried Oreos adorned our table alongside a few shot glasses. Our table was neatly tucked to the left of the entrance across from the bar, beside even neater tucked in comfy seats. Illuminated by the insane lighting and complimented by a contradictory intimate vibe within the bustling night life.

Their tag line “Where the misfits fit” demonstrates exactly what you will find here. It may not be what people looking for low-lit romance, or people looking for the traditional local geezer pub are in need of, but it most certainly knows its audience. The Doghouse is one you need to give a chance.
